Do You Think You’re Serious About Your Basketball Drills For Guards?

Being a basketball guard requires a lot of responsibility and hard work. The team looks up to the guard. He is the team’s ears and mouth when the coach is on the side and cannot be on the court. There are many basketball drills for guards out there that are great to practice to polish up your skills. It is expected that a coach will use a lot of drills as practice for the team, especially the guards.

There are numerous practice drills out there. Different drills focus on developing different skills, which all tie in together to create a valuable leader and team. These drills can enable the guard to better handle the ball, dribble the ball, pass the ball and show off a little fancy footwork as well. The drills also come in handy for dealing with the split decisions being made that can cause an upset in the direction the game is taking.

All members of a team are important. The guard, however, has more responsibility to the team than any other player. He has to lead the team. The guard is on the court when the coach cannot be. He should be a player who is well conditioned and respected by his team.

One of several basketball practice drills is the chair break drill. Chairs should be set up in a zigzag position. The player then dribbles the ball, weaving in and out of the chairs. When he gets to the last chair, with one hand he throws the ball to the coach who is standing in the wing. He then hurries to a chair with a ball on top of it, grabs the ball and scores.

Remember a good guard can use both hands equally. In any situation, he can use his stronger hand or the weaker hand. There are strength-building exercises that one can practice to make this easier. Practice these often until it doesn’t make a difference which hand you use.

Move the ball while dribbling it back and forth. Push the ball forward then pull it back with the same hand. Repeat this over and over again. Do this drill in front of you as well as to the side. This should help you learn to control and guide the ball. It will also give strength to the hand that was the weaker one.

Also dribble as hard and as wild as you can. Practice gaining control of the ball. It will seem hard at first, but once you can accomplish holding on to the ball with the awkward dribbling, it will be a walk in the park when you dribble normally. Greatness takes time, but with continued practice you will get there.

As mentioned before, a guard is the captain, looked upon as the leader. He is as important to the basketball game as the quarterback is to the football game or the goalie is to the soccer game. He is expected to put in more time and practice than any other team member with basketball practice drills and exercise. The coach will usually take up more time practicing basketball drills for guards than other team member because of the responsibility this position entails. No worries though, because excellent training leads to an excellent team.
